Six Die of Lassa Fever in Kaduna

The Federal Government has revealed that six individuals who contracted Lassa fever have tragically passed away in Kaduna State. These six casualties were part of 12 recorded cases, with an additional two originating from another medical facility, Barau Dikko Hospital. 92 individuals are being monitored as they had contact with the affected persons.

Dr Iziaq Salako, the Minister of State for Environment, shared this information during a meeting with the Kaduna State Emergency Response Team. The purpose of the meeting was to understand the nature of the disease outbreak. Dr Salako announced the launch of the National Deratisation Framework, an initiative aimed at preventing and controlling the spread of Lassa fever throughout the country.

During the meeting, a visit was made to the 44 Army Referral Hospital in Kaduna on February 25, 2024. The team assessed the hospital’s overall cleanliness and hygiene standards. They implemented measures such as disinfection and decontamination to prevent the further spread of the disease. These measures were deemed effective and sufficient.

The authorities must continue their vigilance in monitoring and responding to the outbreak to minimise the transmission of Lassa fever and safeguard public health.
