Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has appealed to Nigerians to pray for his mother, Eunice Jonathan, who has been deeply affected by the tragic loss of her eldest child, Obebhatein. Jonathan made this plea during the funeral service of his elder sister, Obebhatein Jonathan, which was held at the Dame Patience Jonathan Square in Otuoke, Bayelsa, as reported by Naija News.
With the passing of his sister, the former President revealed that his mother has now endured the loss of eight of her children, making him the sole surviving child. He expressed his gratitude to the Bayelsa State First Lady and other women who supported his mother during this difficult time, as he was in London at the time.
Jonathan emphasized the significance of the timing of death, stating that while death is inevitable for everyone, the timing of it matters. He acknowledged that his mother is still traumatized by the loss and requested continued prayers for her wellbeing.
The funeral was attended by numerous Nigerians, and Jonathan expressed appreciation for their presence. In his absence, his deceased sister’s second son, Dogood Qkpufu, encouraged women to follow in his mother’s footsteps. He highlighted his mother’s determination to pursue education and become a teacher.
Omonibele Azibanyeluan, the daughter of Obebhatein, described her mother as a good, peaceful, patient, and God-fearing woman who led a modest life and was known for her charitable acts.
Representing the Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, the deputy governor expressed condolences to the Jonathan family, particularly Mama Eunice Jonathan, during the burial ceremony. He urged the younger generation to draw inspiration from the resilience and fearlessness displayed by the late Obebhatein. He emphasized her remarkable educational journey, starting from primary school at the age of 23, even as a mother of three, until she obtained a Bachelor of Education degree.
Diri concluded by stating that although death is inevitable, Obebhatein lived a fulfilling life and had much more to offer her family and society. He highlighted the lessons to be learned from her life, particularly her determination to overcome her humble background and pursue education.
